Revolut Metal is the most exclusive plan offered by Revolut.
It comes with a bunch of features, most based on travel and exchange fees.
I have been using Revolut Metal for 2 years now as we travel as digital nomads. We have been able to use almost all of the features over time and get a good idea of whether it’s worth the monthly subscription fee.
Are you considering upgrading to Revolut Metal?
In my Revolut Metal review, I’ll outline all the benefits you get with the Revolut Metal card and I’ll answer the question…
Is Revolut Metal worth it?
My Personal Revolut Metal Experience
Revolut Metal is a paid Revolut plan that includes a fully metal contactless card.
The Revolut Metal plan has a ton of extra benefits. You’ll get access to bonus travel features and everyday usage rewards. At first glance, it can be overwhelming when you see how many extras you get with the card.
After using Revolut Metal for more than 2 years, I have taken advantage of all of the benefits it offers. I use my Revolut Metal card as my everyday debit card and checking account as we travel as digital nomads.
The app is easy to use and the Metal plan has evolved to include investing and trading features.
But…
Every country has different benefits. What I get included in my Australian Metal plan is slightly different from what Ashley gets in her U.S. plan. Revolut Metal is currently available in the EEA (European Economic Area), Australia, the U.S., the U.K., Singapore and Japan.
Exclusive features roll out to different countries at different rates. In this Revolut Metal review, I have included all the extra features of Revolut Metal. Where certain benefits aren’t available for specific regions, I have also pointed that out.
If you have any questions, let me know in the comments.
Revolut Metal Review Of Top Features
Revolut Metal has a number of really awesome additional features.
Basically, Revolut Metal removes a lot of the limits on the standard Revolut plan and adds a couple of exclusive benefits as well.
Exclusive Metal Card
First up is my favorite feature – well the coolest feature at least!
The Revolut Metal plan comes with an actual 18-gram metal card.
Paying with this card really does make you feel important. Waiters at restaurants sometimes don’t believe me that it’s just a debit card – not a credit card.
The Revolut Metal card is made from completely reinforced steel and is exclusive to Metal customers only. The first card is included in the plan, so there is no extra cost to get it!
I have the black card and my friend has the gold card. The only issue that we have noticed is that the cards do scratch over time.
After a couple of years, you will see some pretty bad wear and tear. Unfortunately, I don’t think there is any way around this.
It’s part of the price of having a metal card vs. a plastic one.
The Revolut Metal card has contactless payments built into it. You can just tap the card at supporting terminals to make payments quickly.
Although this is a pretty standard feature for regular bank cards, it’s a nice feature to have.
The Metal card also includes express delivery, which means you’ll receive the card within 1-3 business days after ordering. That’s pretty quick!
Along with the Metal Card, you’ll also get access to virtual cards.
You can create one-time-use disposable cards that immediately expire once you use them for online transactions.
This is a great feature to add a level of security to your online transactions.
Cashback On Every Transaction
Now for my real favorite feature.
The Revolut Metal plan offers 1% cashback on every purchase made in a supported foreign currency. This includes cryptocurrency. Basically, every time you travel outside of your home country and pay in a foreign currency, you’ll get 1% cashback.
As full-time digital nomads, this one feature almost covers the cost of having Revolut Metal.
I usually earn about the same amount of money in cashback as it costs for the plan. This makes it a no-brainer for me, especially when you factor in all the other benefits.
What happens if you pay in your home currency?
You’ll earn 0.1% cashback on every purchase made in your home currency. This isn’t a lot and certainly doesn’t have much appeal if you are just using Revolut Metal at home.
I think of cashback as a nice bonus that you get every month – even if it’s just a few bucks.
Cashback is only available to Revolut metal users in:
- EEA (European Economic Area)
- United Kingdom
- Australia
- Singapore
- Japan
Most notably, cashback is not a benefit included for the United States Revolut Metal users.
Unlimited International Money Transfers
Foreign exchange fees add up with overseas card payments.
With the Revolut Metal card, you don’t need to worry about it. You can send and spend money at the interbank rate. This includes online payments using your Revolut card. What does it mean?
Check the real current exchange rate on Google and it will be almost identical to what Revolut is offering. In some cases, Revolut’s exchange rate is even better.
Need to make international transfers?
You can do direct deposit bank transfers into over 140+ foreign currencies through the Revolut app at the real international exchange rate. Your first 10 transfers each month on Revolut are free in most countries. For Australia, you have unlimited international transactions.
Revolut also allows you to hold money in 28+ fiat currencies. And with Metal, you can make unlimited free exchanges into those currencies.
I have used this feature to take advantage of favorable exchange times. When traveling in Mexico as digital nomads for 6 months, I set up automatic transfers from Australian Dollars to Mexican Peso.
Whenever the Mexican Peso dropped to a specific rate, I would transfer my Aussie dollars. This is a cool little feature that can save you a bit of money.
The unlimited foreign exchanges and transfers are what make Revolut Metal so attractive. You will save a ton of money overseas while using the debit card and it certainly beats using traditional banks.
The currency exchange benefits on Revolut are the best of any digital bank available at the moment!
Free ATM Withdrawals
If you have ever traveled to an international location where debit and credit cards aren’t widely accepted…
You’ll know how painful the fees can be for ATM withdrawals.
Put simply – I hate paying ATM withdrawal fees. There’s no doubt that banks make huge money from them.
With Revolut Metal, you can withdraw up to $1,200 USD per month (or your regional equivalent) from international ATMs with no fees.
That ends up working out really well because you almost always need cash at some point.
After you exceed the $1,200 limit, you pay a 2% fee on every ATM withdrawal. Even with the added fee, it’s still cheaper than most challenger banks.
Travel And Medical Insurance
Most Revolut Metal plans come with some sort of insurance.
This includes:
- Travel Insurance
- Medical Insurance
How good is the included insurance in the plans?
Here’s what it includes:
- Theft and accident coverage
- Ticket and event coverage
- Discounted device insurance
- Overseas medical insurance
- Delayed baggage insurance
- Delayed flight insurance
While it might look good, it’s definitely a basic level of travel and medical insurance.
The small details tell the story. If you are a short-term traveler and take trips of less than 90 days each, the included Revolut Metal insurance might work for you. Any trips that are longer than 90 days are not covered.
You also must have a return flight booked back to your home country.
Can you actually rely on Revolut Metal travel insurance?
Yes, you can, but you need to know the requirements. Honestly, the level of travel protection offered isn’t nearly as good as competitors like the N26 black card or an AMEX credit card.
Make sure you check out their full policy to see if it’s right for you.
As digital nomads, the Revolut Metal insurance doesn’t work for us because we are gone for more than 90 days at a time. Instead, we use SafetyWing to cover us. You can check out our full SafetyWing review to learn more.

Revolut Metal insurance is included for most users but not for Australian Revolut users.
Bonus Travel Benefits
Love to travel?
Revolut Metal comes with some unique bonus travel benefits.
One of the coolest benefits is SmartDelay. If your flight is delayed by more than an hour, Revolut will give you and 3 friends free airport lounge passes. We’ve actually taken advantage of this feature and it works really well.
You simply add your flight information to the Revolut app and the moment that your flight is over an hour delayed, you’ll get the free lounge passes.
What’s more, the free lounge passes need to be activated within 96 hours. So if your flight is delayed by more than an hour but you didn’t get a chance to use the free passes, you could use them at the next destination. This works out nicely if your next destination is just a layover!
What about if you just want a lounge pass on demand?
Revolut Metal has you covered there as well. You can simply purchase a LoungeKey Pass through the app. This will give you instant access to 1000+ airport lounges around the world.
Depending on the lounge and location, you will typically pay about $30 to $35 USD per pass. This works out to be about 50% to 30% cheaper than just walking up to a lounge and paying the standard door price.
Ashley and I love airport lounges. For layovers of 3+ hours, we will almost always get a lounge and the Revolut Metal plan usually gets us the best deal.
Both of these features are available with the Revolut Premium card as well; the only difference is that SmartDelay with Premium only gets you 2 lounge passes.
With Revolut Metal, you get 4 lounge passes.

Savings Vaults
Revolut vaults make it easy to save.
Think of vaults like a storage container.
You move money from your main Revolut account into the savings vault. You can also set up roundups to automatically save money with every transaction you make. This includes cryptocurrency.
For example, if a transaction ends up being $9.42, Revolut will round it up to $10.00 and deposit the extra $0.58 into the vault for you. You can even set it to 1x-10x roundups, so you really save at a rapid rate.
Vaults are a standard feature that every Revolut account comes with.
But with the Metal plan, you can also earn interest on your savings…
Revolut U.S. and U.K. Metal plan members earn 0.07% APY (Annual percentage yield) on money in their savings vaults.
It’s worth mentioning that you earn the same amount of interest with the Premium Revolut Plan.
While this isn’t amazing, you get some benefit from storing your money in a Revolut savings vault.
European Revolut members will start to earn interest on savings in 2022.
Revolut Australia doesn’t currently offer any interest on savings. There isn’t any plan to add it at this stage.
Unlimited Commission Free Trading
Revolut offers members several trading tools.
This allows you to trade:
- Cryptocurrency
- Stocks
- Commodities
With Metal, you can trade more crypto with lower fees. The trading fees you have to pay depend on your Revolut region.
In the European Economic Area and the U.K., standard Revolut accounts pay a crypto exchange fee of 2.5% and a commodities trading fee of 1.5%. With Metal, you’ll pay 1.5% for cryptocurrency trades and 0.5% for commodities trades.
Stock trading is not yet available in the EEA or U.K.
You can trade commission-free in the U.S. and Australia anyway, so there are no extra benefits here. But in Australia on Metal, you’ll get unlimited commission-free trades.
With Revolut Standard and Revolut Premium there are caps.
If you plan to trade regularly using Revolut, the Metal plan will save you money. It can be even cheaper than using regular exchanges in some countries.
Note: Revolut does not have every stock, commodity or cryptocurrency on their platform. You are limited to what they offer.
Priority Customer Support
Support is important for any bank.
It’s even more important for digital banks (fintech companies) that don’t have physical locations to visit.
Revolut offers support with an in-app chat feature where you can contact their customer service team with any issues you have.
On the Standard Revolut plan, it’s not 24/7. In my experience, it takes about 4-12 hours for their customer service team to message you back. Have a time-sensitive issue?
You could be in some trouble.
But that changes with Revolut Metal.
With Metal plans, you get 24/7 priority customer support. If you need to contact the Revolut customer service team, you can send them a message at any time and they usually join the chat within a couple of minutes.
The quality of customer service I have experienced is much better with the Metal card than when I had the Standard Revolut card.
It’s certainly a significant benefit to getting issues sorted quickly.
Revolut Metal Pricing and Minimum Duration
Revolut operates on subscription fees.
You simply pay a fee every month to get access to the card’s benefits.
The pricing for Revolut Metal is:
- United States: $16.99 USD per month
- United Kingdom: £14.99 per month
- European Economic Area (EEA): €15.99 per month
- Australia: $24.99 AUD per month
- Japan: ¥1,980 YEN per month
- Singapore: $19.99 SGD per month
You can save 2 months of subscription fees by paying upfront for the entire year. This is a good way to save more on the fees.
Speaking of commitment…
Is there any commitment period for Revolut Metal?
Short Answer – Yes.
Revolut requires all members to sign up for 12 months. You can still pay the subscription fees monthly, but there is a 12-month commitment.
The truth is that Revolut is NOT very upfront about this either. I only found out by contacting support and asking them directly.
You can choose to cancel your subscription before the 12 months, but they charge you a 2-month dishonor fee.
After the 12-month period, you can cancel anytime. But be aware…
If you cancel and then choose to resubscribe, the 12-month commitment restarts.
Revolut Metal Pros & Cons
Revolut offers a lot of great benefits with the metal card. But it’s certainly not perfect.
Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of Revolut Premium:
Revolut Metal Pros:
- Lots of great features that will benefit digital nomads, travelers and remote workers
- Competitively priced against other travel cards and digital banks
- Awesome 18g Metal card design
- 4x the amount of free ATM withdrawal limits for most countries including Europe, U.K. and Australia
- Lower cryptocurrency, stock and commodity trading service fees at just 1.5%
- Easy and fast plan upgrade process
- Express delivery of Metal card (only 1-3 business days)
Revolut Metal Cons:
- Have to commit to 12 months on the Metal Plan
- Basic medical travel insurance that only covers trips of up to 90 days
- Plan benefits can vary significantly depending on your country of residence
Is Revolut Metal Worth It?
Now for the big question…
Is Revolut Metal actually worth it?
Hopefully with this Revolut Metal review you have been able to draw your own conclusions about whether it’s worth it for you personally.
As for me…
Yes, I think that Revolut Metal is definitely worth it. I use Revolut Metal as my primary debit card and checking account.
Because we travel in foreign countries for 335+ days of the year, the Metal plan saves me a ton of money in card transactions and currency exchange fees. I also get a nice bonus from the 1% cashback because we use the card to book monthly accommodations on places like Airbnb.
If you plan to use Revolut as your primary bank, I think it’s definitely worth upgrading to Metal.
Like anything, review the benefits that Metal offers and see if you will actually use them. The monthly fee is usually a no-brainer if you can take advantage of the benefits.
