Settling into a new country as digital nomads isn’t always easy…⁣
⁣
…We spent our first full month in Medellin, Colombia going through a list of things to sort out for ourselves (per usual).⁣
⁣
It might look like we just land in a country and have everything sorted by day 1 but that’s certainly not the case.⁣
⁣
In each country as digital nomads, you have to:⁣
- Buy a local SIM card (or find an eSIM solution - @airalocom & @realnomadtravel are our faves)⁣
- Find your local grocery store⁣
- Get connected with the digital nomad community (constantly putting ourselves out there)⁣
- Figure out where to work (coworking vs cafes)⁣
- Plan the activities we want to do while visiting the country⁣
- And so much more!⁣
⁣
We heard so much about Medellin for digital nomads, we just had to check out what all the buzz was about (especially as we run a blog for digital nomads).⁣
⁣
This was also my (Ashley’s) birthday month and we went paragliding for the first time (2nd pic). We flew with @paraglidingmedellin 💯 I absolutely loved it - if you get the chance, it was a great experience!⁣

2022 didn’t start off as we expected…⁣
⁣
…lying on the beach in Thailand, one of our favorite places in the world. 🌴⁣
⁣
Instead, we were touring a couple more US cities: Phoenix, San Francisco and Miami! At this point, we didn’t know how our year would look but we just needed to nail down our next location as digital nomads.⁣
⁣
How did we do that? Simply go on Google flights, enter Miami (where we currently were) and don’t add a destination! There was one place that popped up that was high on our digital nomad destination list - Medellin, Colombia! 🇨🇴⁣
⁣
For $245.15 USD total, Matthew and I hopped on a 2 hour plane ride to a country (and continent) we’ve never stepped foot on before! 🥹⁣
⁣
We were tired of flying and traveling (faster than usual) and we decided to make Medellin our base for a few months but that’s for the next couple of posts to come…⁣

Well, that's the truth...🤷🏻‍♀️ ⠀ Dig Well, that's the truth...🤷🏻‍♀️
⠀
Digital nomad life isn’t for everyone.

There are days you’ll feel excited to live in a new country every couple of months, ready to learn about other cultures & always inspired by fellow digital nomads you meet on the road.

But there are days where you’ll feel lonely, stuck, miserable and exhausted from moving and/or always making new friends.

This digital nomad lifestyle is no way perfect, as it may look. But…

We wouldn’t have it any other way 🤍

Zagreb isn’t your likely destination when visiti Zagreb isn’t your likely destination when visiting Croatia 🇭🇷

In fact, lots of people never make it up this way. But digital nomads do!

Here’s the reasons we chose Zagreb as our digital nomad hub for the month of July:

💸 AFFORDABLE COST OF LIVING
Zagreb is less crowded during the summer time which means you get more deals on things like accommodation - its much cheaper than Split or Dubrovnik! Here’s some numbers (in USD) to give you a better picture:

🚊 Public transport = $0.80
☕️ Coffee + drinks = $2 - $4
🍽 Eating Out = $9 - $12
🛶 Activities = $5 - $50

👯‍♀️ GROWING DIGITAL NOMAD COMMUNITY
We’re surprised by how strong the community is in Zagreb! We made friends during our first coworking event & found an awesome group of digital nomads to hang out with ever since.

👩🏻‍💻 DECENT CAFE & COWORKING SCENE
We cowork at cafes with our friends at least 2-3 times a week. Coworking is kind of expensive here and imo not worth it because it’s too ‘corporate’ for our liking.

⛺️ GREAT BASE TO EXPLORE CROATIA
Plitvice Lakes is 2.5 hours away & popular coast towns like Pula, Zadar or Rovinj are only 3-4 hours drive away. You get the structure that comes from having a base but you get to travel/explore on the weekends - kinda perfect!

☺️ COMFORTABLE LIFESTYLE
Public transport is a breeze in Zagreb - you can take a bus, tram or walk into the city fairly quick. It's super safe here!

We’ve lived in Zagreb as digital nomads for a couple weeks now and tbh - we didn’t love it at first. But after some time, we can now say we are seriously enjoying our lifestyle here. The community is amazing and we’re so glad we chose Zagreb! It’s just so peaceful and comfortable (which you don’t expect from a capital city)!

Would you consider being a digital nomad in Zagreb?

Digital nomad health insurance is a big decision.

Why?

You need to ensure that the insurance offers the right level of coverage for you and more importantly – You can trust the provider to have your back when you need it.

Here’s the problem:

Finding the right health insurance sucks.

You don’t want to comb through all of the fine print to make sure you are “covered properly”. On the other hand, you don’t want to find out that you weren’t covered for something when it’s already too late!

What’s the good news?

I’ve put together a list of the best digital nomad health insurance providers available. Each of these is based on my research and breaks down the good, the bad and what you should know about each.

But ensure you always do your due diligence to get the right insurance. Because no one knows you better than you, right?

Now, let’s get into it!

What You Need To Consider Before Buying Health Insurance
Wrapping It Up

What Is Digital Nomad Health Insurance?

Digital nomad health insurance is a type of international health insurance designed specifically for digital nomads, remote workers and even expats. It usually covers things like medical expenses, preventative care, doctor visits, pre-existing conditions and so much more.

Think of digital nomad health insurance as a safety net for your travels.

You can continue to have normal health care like you would in your home country, but on a global scale. We only count digital nomad health insurance as companies that provide health care in multiple countries outside of your home country.

Digital Nomad Health Insurance vs Travel Insurance

There are some significant differences between health insurance and travel insurance.

To put it simply…

Health insurance covers medical costs and expenses related to health care. In contrast, travel insurance covers trip-related costs such as emergency medical and travel delays.

Check out this table below to get a better idea of what each type of insurance can cover:

International Health Insurance Travel Insurance
Medical Emergency Care ✅ ✅
Medication ✅ ✅
Intensive Care ✅ ✅
Ambulance ✅ ✅
Emergency Dental ✅ ✅
Medical Evacuation ✅ ✅
Non-Emergency Medical ✅ ❌
Rehabilitation ✅ ❌
Preventative Care ✅ ❌
Dental Checkups ✅ ❌
Vision Checkups ✅ ❌
Mental Health ✅ ❌
Maternity Care ✅ ❌
New Born Care ✅ ❌
Physiotherapy ✅ ❌
Chiropractic ✅ ❌
Pre-existing Conditions ✅ ❌
Cancer Treatment ✅ ❌
Trip Interruption ❌ ✅
Travel Delay ❌ ✅
Lost Checked Luggage ❌ ✅
Flight Delay ❌ ✅
Stolen Items ❌ ✅
Personal Liability Insurance ❌ ✅

The bottom line is this…

Travel insurance focuses on emergency coverage for trips and often has extra coverage for trip delays and lost baggage. Travel insurance is cheaper than health insurance because it covers far less.

International health insurance is usually only for medical-related expenses. It focuses on comprehensive health care such as preventative care, doctor visits, cancer treatment etc. Digital nomad health insurance also covers you for emergency medical expenses while overseas.

These Are The 6 Best Digital Nomad Health Insurance Options

Now that you have a better idea of health insurance and the differences between digital nomad travel insurance, let’s dive into the best health insurance for digital nomads.

The truth is that the best digital nomad health insurance will be different for everyone. I know that’s not what you necessarily want to hear – but it is true.

To make this as valuable for you as possible, I have done the research and put together what I consider the best health insurance for digital nomads with what makes them unique.

The best digital nomad health insurance are:

  1. Genki World Resident – Best Digital Nomad Health Insurance Overall
  2. PassportCard Nomads – Best For No Deductible & No Out Of Pocket Claims Insurance
  3. Insured Nomads – Best Comprehensive Digital Nomad Insurance
  4. SafetyWing Remote – Best Entrepreneurs That Want Coverage For Remote Teams
  5. IMG Global – Best For Reliable Digital Nomad Health Insurance
  6. Cigna Global – Best For Digital Nomads That Want To Customise Their Plan

Keep in mind that each insurance provider offers different plan levels. I have highlighted the differences as best as possible without making this a huge 30-page document.

Just to be clear – I am not an insurance professional. This is my own research findings and personal opinion. Make sure you choose the best insurance for you personally and always check an insurance provider before purchasing health insurance.

Let’s get into the details!

1. Genki World Resident

Genki World Resident has fast become one of the top digital nomad health insurance you can buy.

They offer excellent medical coverage and outstanding value for money.

genki world resident international nomads health insurance

I would go as far as saying that Genki probably offers the best value for money of any international health insurance provider on this list. Especially when you consider what’s included.

But that’s not all…

One of the big standouts for Genki World Resident is transparency. They make it extremely clear what’s included and what’s not with their health insurance policy.

genki world resident benefits and exclusions

Transparency is something that the insurance industry usually lacks – So this is a big plus for Genki.

Another unique thing about Genki is who they cover.

Many global health insurance providers won’t cover people from specific nationalities, such as the United States or Canada. But Genki World Resident covers individuals, couples, and families – any citizen, any residence and any age.

That’s impressive!

What Do You Get With Genki World Resident Health Insurance?

Genki has 2 health insurance plans:

  1. Genki World Resident
  2. Genki World Resident Premium

What’s the difference?

With Genki World Resident Premium, you get more health insurance benefits – But it also costs more. This is great because you can lower the cost of your monthly insurance price if you don’t need the “premium” benefits.

Here is a breakdown of what’s included in Genki World Resident and Genki World Resident Premium:

World Resident World Resident Premium
Plan Max Limit No Overal Limit (Sub-limits may apply) No Overal Limit (Sub-limits may apply)
Dedeductibles €0, €500, €1,000 per year €0, €500, €1,000 per year
Inpatient & Outpatient Medical Treatment ✅ ✅
Telemedicine & 24/7 Emergency Assistance ✅ ✅
Direct Billing With Any Hospital ✅ ✅
Medical Transport To A Suitable Hospital ✅ ✅
Repatriation To Your Home Country ✅ ✅
Initial Outpatient Psychological Primary Care ✅ ✅
Inpatient Psychotherapy ✅ ✅
Alternative Treatments (e.g. homeopathy) ✅ ✅
Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Chiropractic ✅ ✅
Dental Fillings, Inlays, Root Canal Treatment ✅ ✅
Prenatal Care, Childbirth & Postnatal Care ✅ ✅
Vaccinations & Medical Checkups ✅ ❌
Eyesight Correction Surgery (€2,000 / eye) ✅ ❌
Glasses & Contact Lenses (€300 / two years) ✅ ❌
Dental Cleaning (two per year) ✅ ❌
Dentures (50% of the costs) ✅ ❌
Outpatient Psychotherapy ✅ ❌
Outpatient Rehabilitation Measures ✅ ❌
First-Trimester Screening & Amniocentesis ✅ ❌

The Genki World Resident Premium plan is very attractive! You get a ton of extra benefits over the standard plan. It’s impressive what they have been able to pack into it.

Both health insurance plans cover medical treatment anywhere globally at any locally recognized healthcare provider. What does this mean?

Many digital nomad health insurance companies will have a list of hospitals they cover. With Genki, the only rule is that they must be locally recognized as a health care provider. That essentially gives you free rein on where you get medical care!

Genki World Resident also covers all sports!

Surfing, skiing, snowboarding, diving, kayaking, cycling, hiking and climbing, for example, are all covered. Insurance companies often have a massive list of sports and activities excluded from their insurance plans.

Not Genki!

They even cover scooter and car accidents!

Overall, Genki offers a very premium level of health care and medical coverage for digital nomads worldwide!

Genki World Resident Pros & Cons

Genki Pros:

  • Comprehensive medical insurance with almost no limits on most medical coverage
  • Offers the best value for money with lower monthly costs than most competitors
  • Designed especially for digital nomads and allows you to buy outside your home country
  • No deductibles are available – you get to choose
  • Covers all kinds of sports with no exclusions as long as you aren’t doing it for money
  • Solid and efficient claims process – they can even be direct
  • Option to buy Genki World Resident Premium and take your health care to the next level
  • Genki is backed by Barmenia and DR-WALTER which are big European insurance companies with great reputations

Genki Cons:

  • Cover in your home country is limited to 180 days per calendar year
  • Genki World Resident Premium has most of the top benefits and is significantly more for expensive

Genki World Resident Insurance Pricing

Genki’s pricing is as straightforward as digital nomad health insurance pricing gets.

There are no massive forms to fill out to get a quote.

The amount you ultimately pay comes down to-

  • Your age
  • Coverage in USA and Canada
  • The deductible amount you choose

It’s also worth noting that there’s a medical questionnaire involved which is pretty standard for health insurance. That means things like pre-existing conditions can affect the price you pay.

The following price table shows the costs for a person aged 25-34 for World Resident:

USA & Canada Deductible Price/month
Limited* €1,000 / year €160
Limited* €500 / year €185
Limited* None €225
Included €1,000 / year €470
Included €500 / year €495
Included None €540

And these are costs for a person aged 25-34 for World Resident Premium:

USA & Canada Deductible Price/month
Limited* €1,000 / year €190
Limited* €500 / year €215
Limited* None €250
Included €1,000 / year €490
Included €500 / year €530
Included None €580

You are probably wondering what “limited*” means for USA and Canada?

Here’s the simple explanation:

With the limited coverage in USA and Canada, you are only covered for a maximum of 6 weeks. This also only includes medical emergencies, consequences of an accident and death. So keep that in mind.

If you are older (or younger), you can check their website for health insurance costs related to your age. It generally increases by about €10 – €25+ per month for the next age bracket.

You will be charged when confirming your health insurance subscription for the first month. Then you are billed automatically on the same day each month. Genki has a minimum 12-month contract. After that, you can cancel anytime!

Genki has the best overall coverage that I could find! And they have one of the lowest monthly prices too. This is why they are first on our list!

2. PassportCard Nomads

PassportCard Nomads is one of the most innovative digital nomad health insurance companies available.

They have taken everything you hate about insurance and removed it (almost, anyway).

passportcard nomads international nomads health insurance

Let me explain:

There are 3 annoying issues with any health insurance you buy today:

  • You have to pay deductibles (often huge)
  • The claims process is long and horrible
  • You’re out of pocket for “non-major” claims

But that changes with PassportCard Nomads…

When you sign up for health insurance with PassportCard Nomads, you receive a “red debit card”. This is where the magic begins.

Let’s say you get injured and you go to the doctor. When it’s time to pay, contact PassportCard Nomads and they will add the money directly to your red debit card. Simply pay the doctor with the red debit card and walk away!

Not out-of-pocket expenses. No claims. No deductibles. No hassle.

It doesn’t get much better than that, right?

PassportCard Nomads even has an incredible app to manage your entire insurance plan. This is all backed by great customer support that really cares!

You can see why PassportCard Nomads has risen to be one of the best digital nomad health insurance providers around.

What Do You Get With PassportCard Nomads Health Insurance?

PassportCards Nomads was developed specifically for digital nomads and long-term travelers. And they have done an incredible job with it!

They offer 2 different digital nomad health insurance plans:

  • Remote – Hybrid between travel and health insurance

PassportCard Nomads has done a great job with their digital nomad insurance. The truth is that if you don’t have the budget for health insurance, you are often left out in the cold.

The Remote plan offers great benefits for a very affordable price. And if you want to ball out and get more comprehensive coverage, Comfort is right there.

But wait, there’s more…

You might have noticed that all PassportCard Nomads insurance packages only cover medical. As a digital nomad, you might want to cover other things like baggage and personal items.

That’s where “extra add-ons” comes in.

extra add ons passportcard nomads insurance

You can customize your plan to add coverage for things like your laptop, camera, baggage, dangerous sports and even personal liability. You can get the benefits of both health insurance and travel insurance rolled into one.

There isn’t another provider that I have seen that offers this!

PassportCard Nomads offers the flexibility we need to manage our health properly as digital nomads!

PassportCard Nomads Pros & Cons

PassportCard Nomads Pros:

  • Easy claims process with no out-of-pocket expenses using the red debit card (great benefit)
  • $0 deductibles (can depend on age)
  • Great coverage across 2 different plans
  • Excellent app for managing your nomad insurance plan
  • Completely customizable add-ons so you only pay for what you want
  • Award-winning customer service and 24/7 emergency hotline
  • Buy insurance while you are abroad
  • Cancel, extend or modify your plan anytime you need
  • Plans are paid on a subscription model with no massive upfront costs
  • Easy signup process and everything is managed digitally (no paperwork)

PassportCard Nomads Cons:

  • Very limited coverage sports in base plans (available as “extreme sports add-on”)
  • Minimum 7-Day waiting period on all insurance plans
  • Not possible to add on trip cancellation coverage at all

PassportCard Nomads Insurance Pricing

How much does PassportCard Nomads cost?

The amount you pay primarily depends on your chosen plan, age and the countries you want to be covered in. Here is what each plan starts at:

Remote Comfort
From $119 per month From $200 per month
Renewable for up to 12 months Renewable forever (unlimited)
Plan Limit: $1,000,000 Plan Limit: $3,500,000
Comprehensive medical travel insurance. Also includes outpatient care and routine checkups. Comprehensive remote health insurance including things like chronic illness treatment and cancer treatment.

Compare these prices to other digital nomad health insurance providers and you will see how reasonable they are. Especially when you consider the no-out-of pocket expenses, no claims and no deductibles.

PassportCard Nomads has a minimum commitment length on the Comfort plan of 12 months. After that, you can cancel anytime. The Remote plan has no minimum commitment, so you can cancel anytime.

If you want hassle-free digital nomad insurance that this comprehensive and flexible, it doesn’t get much better than PassportCard Nomads!

  • Offers some travel insurance coverage such as theft protection
  • Adventure sports coverage is pretty good
  • Straightforward, user-friendly registration process with good transparency
  • Innovative INC app that offers extra benefits I haven’t seen in any other insurance company
  • Great telemedicine and mental health support you can access while on the go

Insured Nomads Cons:

  • Expensive insurance that might be too much for some digital nomads
  • Long waiting periods apply to wellness check-ups, maternity, mental health and substance abuse
  • Doesn’t offer insurance plans to people with a country of residence in the USA and Switzerland
  • Some pre-existing conditions are left out – make sure you check it

Insured Nomads Insurance Pricing

It’s hard to give an exact quote on Insured Nomads because they don’t have set pricing.

The best thing to do is get your own quote here.

But for me, as a 28-year-old Australian starting my health insurance plan in Australia, here is the quick quote that I received at the time of writing:

  • Premium: From $303 USD per month
  • Premium Plus: From $449 USD per month

insured nomads pricing and quick quote example

Those prices included a $0 deductible in them. As you can see, Insured Nomads are on the premium end of digital nomad health insurance.

After getting your quick quote, you be required to answer some health-related questions. At the end of the process, you will receive your final quote and can choose the insurance plan you want.

Like all the other insurers on the list, Insured Nomads’ health insurance requires a 12-month minimum commitment but can be paid monthly.

Insured Nomads is worth looking into if you have the budget and want premium coverage (plus some really cool benefits). You get a high level of annual coverage and the plans are tailored to meet the demands of digital nomad life.

4. SafetyWing Remote Health

SafetyWing is one of the biggest names in the digital nomad insurance industry.

They were one of the first companies to offer insurance specifically to digital nomads.

safetywing remote health

You could go as far as saying they kicked off an entirely new insurance sub-industry for digital nomads alone. But that’s an argument for another time.

SafetyWing offers a range of insurance plans, including SafetyWing Remote Health – Their flagship digital nomad health insurance plan. And the truth is – it’s actually pretty good!

safetywing remote health features

SafetyWing has taken a different approach to Remote Health.

Many international health insurance plans have zero or limited coverage in your home country or country of residence. Remote Health covers you in your own country or any country you travel to. Some exclusions apply, but this is impressive!

If you are only traveling for 6 months of the year and then are in your home country for the other 6, SafetyWing Remote Health is still an option. But there is one big downside…

Remote Health ISN’T available to people from the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, UAE and a few more countries at this time. So you need to double-check if it is available to you!

But 175+ countries are covered as your main residence, so it should be fine for most people!

What Do You Get With SafetyWing Remote Insurance?

SafetyWing Remote Health is a fully equipped insurance plan for digital nomads and remote workers.

They have created a concrete digital nomad health insurance plan that covers what you would expect and a bit more. Here is a breakdown of what’s included:

Remote Health

*All full refund benefits are based off of usual, customary and reasonable costs for the geographical area where the expenses were incurred.

SafetyWing has put together a solid health insurance plan without it being anything special. The big thing I like about SafetyWing is that they understand digital nomads.

In fact, most of their team is fully remote, with tons of them moving around as digital nomads.

SafetyWing Remote Health Pros & Cons

SafetyWing Pros:

  • Good level of international health insurance coverage for the amount you pay
  • Cost-effective even for digital nomads with lower budgets
  • A $0 deductible (for most things) and fast claims processing times of about 15 days
  • You can be outside of your home country when you start your SafetyWing remote health insurance policy
  • Great extra benefits to improve your health insurance coverage like dental, vision and vaccines
  • 24/7 customer support through phone and direct message

SafetyWing Cons:

  • Limited coverage while traveling in the USA, Hong Kong and Singapore
  • Residents of countries such as the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and the UAE can’t get Remote Health Insurance at all
  • Currently only available as remote teams plan, not for individuals (yet)
  • Not as high maximum limit coverage as other global health insurance

SafetyWing Insurance Pricing

SafetyWing Remote Health plans primarily depend on your age.

Remote Health starts at $206 per month for a person aged 18-39.

safetywing remote health insurance price

This is really competitive pricing and benefits for the amount you pay each month.

Like most other digital nomad health insurance providers, SafetyWing requires a 12-month contract commitment, but you can pay your plan monthly or yearly.

SafetyWing Remote Health is currently only available to remote business owners who want coverage for their remote teams. But the good news is that SafetyWing is about to launch individual plans!

They have a waiting list which I recommend signing up for it now if you are interested.

SafetyWing also has a popular travel insurance plan called SafetyWing Nomads. Read through our comprehensive SafetyWing review to learn more about it.

5. IMG Global

IMG Global is an excellent choice for digital nomads looking for a reliable health insurance provider.

They have over 30 years of experience as a quality international health and travel insurance company.

img global international health insurance

IMG Global’s medical insurance policies are tailored toward the nomadic lifestyle and allow you to switch countries without any additional paperwork. They also offer competitive premiums, high caps on medical expenses and 24/7 support from multicultural staff.

That’s a big plus!

I also like how they offer a number of different plans and benefits, so you get something that suits your lifestyle needs and budget.

What Do You Get With IMG Global Health Insurance?

IMG Global good global medical insurance.

Every plan is customized to your individual needs, so you must fill out a health insurance quote to get accurate details on what’s included in your plan.

IMG Global has extremely detailed information on its website about what they cover under each plan. I couldn’t begin to create a table that even showed summary benefits of each plan because of how detailed it is.

You can check out all the benefits here. Below is an image with some basic information of coverage so you can see what we are working with here:

short summary benefits IMG international health insurance

That’s a lot of data, right? The full table is even longer!

But the good news is that this shows transparency on IMG’s part. You know what you are getting. Make sure you check out the full list of benefits.

It’s important to know that your deductible and co-insurance change based on whether you receive treatment in or outside the US. If you are inside the US you need to pay attention to IMG Global’s PPO network.

It’s also worth noting that IMG does offer health insurance to all nationalities with very few exclusions. They have worked hard to cover digital nomads, expats and travelers as much as possible.

IMG Global Pros & Cons

IMG Global Pros

  • Affordable health insurance coverage with up to 4 different plans to choose from
  • Customize and personalize your plan to meet your lifestyle needs and budget
  • Large annual maximum claim limits – especially when compared to competitors
  • Transparency when signing up for IMG Global international health insurance
  • Excellent 24/7 customer service whenever you need them
  • Great reputation with more than 30 years as a recognized health and travel insurance provider

IMG Global Cons:

  • Lengthy quote form that requires a lot of information
  • No $0 deductible option is available
  • Age limit of 75 years old

IMG Global Insurance Pricing

The IMG Global health insurance quote form is on the lengthy side.

While it feels transparent, you need to enter quite a bit of information, including your height and weight. You can also customize your plan with the overall coverage limit and deductible you want. All of these affect the price.

Remember – all plans are personalized, so your price will differ from mine.

But here’s an idea of how much you can expect to pay based on the following information at the time of writing:

  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 28
  • Nationality: Australian
  • Coverage Area: Worldwide (excludes US)
  • Deductible: $250 ($0 isn’t an option)
  • Coverage Limit: Silver – $5,000,000
  • Payment Schedule: Monthly

The amount I was quoted at the time of writing was $3,015.60 per year. Broken up over 12 months, that would leave me with a monthly payment of $251.30.

img global health insurance quote example

This is good, considering what you are getting! Remember that this is a quick quote and the health questions later in the form could change the price.

As you can see, there is a lot to customize with IMG. This is great because you only pay for what you want and need.

You can even choose quarterly, semi-annually or annually, which will give you a small discount on your insurance. All health insurance plans with IMG Global require a 12-month minimum contract.

IMG Global is a popular international digital nomad health insurance company. Especially amongst United States citizens and residents.

But there are some conditions for United States citizens and residents, such as you must plan to be residing outside the US on or before their effective date and renewal dates and for at least 6 out of the next 12 months.

Make sure you always read the fine print before buying health insurance!

IMG Global combines good flexibility with great coverage and reasonably good value for money. They are one of the most reliable health insurance providers for digital nomads and have a solid global reputation.

Get your own quote with IMG Global here.

6. Cigna Global

Cigna Global is another big name in the international healthcare insurance market.

Their coverage extends to over 200+ countries and territories worldwide, and they offer a 24/7 call center with more than 50 languages spoken.

cigna global health insurance

So yeah, they are one of the big hitters in digital nomad health insurance.

The unique thing about Cigna Global’s health insurance is customization and personalization. I have yet to see another provider that offers the level they do.

You can customize your plans-

  • Area of cover
  • Payment period (monthly, quarterly, yearly)
  • Deductible ($0 is an option)
  • Cost share
  • Out-of-pocket maximums
  • Insurance plan level
  • Additional benefits like vision, dental care and more

Each and every one of these things affects the end price you pay.

Here’s why I love this:

Regardless of your budget, Cigna Global can probably make a plan work. You only ever pay for what you want and nothing more!

What Do You Get With Cigna Global Health Insurance?

It’s hard to detail what you get with Cigna Global because of their customized and personalized plans.

The best way to see exactly what you get is to get a quote from them.

But to give you some idea of what you get, here is how Cigna works. Whenever you get a quote, you will get 3 different plans to choose from:

  • Silver Health
  • Gold Health
  • Platinum Health

cingna global health insurance plans

The main difference is the coverage limit you get with each benefit. With Platnimum Health, most benefits have coverage limited up to the overall annual maximum.

But all of Cigna’s insurance plans include:

  • Medical care essentials, including hospitals stays and treatments
  • Flexible plans tailored to your needs and budget
  • Priority access to support from Cigna doctors and nurses
  • Digital portal to securely store important documents

Cigna’s base plans are designed to cover the essential medical coverage you need. Then you can add the extras you like to complete your health insurance plan.

Cigna Global Pros & Cons

Cigna Global Pros:

  • Comprehensive global coverage
  • Customize and personalize your plan to meet your budget and needs
  • Flexible options to suit lots of different lifestyles
  • Great customer service with 24/7 support and over 50 languages available

Cigna Glgal Cons:

  • Not a straightforward signup process
  • It can get expensive quickly
  • You are limited to Cinga’s network of hospitals and doctors

Cigna Global Insurance Pricing

Cigna doesn’t offer set insurance pricing.

Each plan is very customized to you personally. That means I can’t give you exact pricing on how much the plans cost. The only way to see how much Cigna Global will set you back is by doing your own online quote.

But I did create a quote so you can get an idea. For this quote, I put the following:

  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 28
  • Citizenship: United States of America
  • Current Country: Thailand

The monthly prices I got quoted started at ฿4,293.33 THB, which is approximately $121.49 USD. This included a $0 deductible and worldwide coverage – Including the United States.

That’s not a bad price, right?

And if I want to add on any extras, this is how much they cost:

cinga global costs of additional benefits

As you can adding outpatient almost doubles the plan costs alone. All up on the Silver plan and adding outpatient, vision and dental we ended up at ฿9,108.77 THB.

final cinga global quote

That’s about $257.78 USD at the time of writing. Not too bad for the included benefits, considering it’s worldwide and has a $0 deductible.

Prices will change and differ widely based on you personally, so take the above prices with a pinch of salt. The biggest downside of Cigna Global is that their plans are challenging to understand.

But if you want to personalize your insurance plan, it doesn’t get much better than what they offer!

Our Choice: Best Digital Nomad Health Insurance

The best digital nomad health insurance is Genki World Resident.

Here’s why:

To start with, Genki World Resident is packed full of benefits. You get excellent worldwide medical coverage, including inpatient and outpatient care. This is especially true if you want to take your coverage up a level with Genki World Resident Premium and add preventative doctor checkups to your benefits plan.

genki world resident best digital nomad health insurance

Genki includes bonuses like telemedicine so you can consult a qualified doctor in a video call. You’ll even have physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic and alternative treatments (e.g. homeopathy) in both Genki World Resident plans.

Most digital nomads like to naturally take care of their bodies, so alternative treatment coverage is a huge benefit!

And if you love your sports, there isn’t much better coverage than Genki’s “all sport” inclusion. Every sport is included – as long as you are not paid to play (professional).

All of this with no overall cost limit (with very few exclusions) and the potential for a $0 deductible. This is about as comprehensive as I have found!

The value for money that Genki offers is excellent!

When you sign up with Genki World Resident or Genki World Resident Premium, you will be put in touch with a live agent who will help you understand exactly what you are getting!

Incredible customer service and support are something that every quality digital nomad health insurance provider should offer. With Genki, customer service starts before you even sign up!

What You Need To Consider Before Buying Health Insurance

Before we wrap up this digital nomad health insurance blog, I wanted to touch on some things you should consider before signing up.

Make sure you consider these-

  • Coverage and services offered: Make sure the health insurance policy covers all of your needs, such as emergency medical care, pre-existing conditions, preventive care and more.
  • Location of coverage: Ensure that the health insurance covers you in the locations you visit and stay in.
  • Cost: Different providers offer different premiums and deductibles. Consider your budget when choosing an international health insurance plan because you are making at least a 12-month commitment.
  • Reputation: Read reviews and feedback from previous customers to ensure you are signing up with a reputable company that will be there when you need them.
  • Network: Check if the provider has access to a global network of hospitals and doctors for medical care in case of an emergency. Many quality digital nomad health insurance providers will allow you to go to any locally authorized health care provider – This is ideal!
  • Customer service: Make sure the insurer provides 24/7 customer support that is multilingual and knowledgeable about the digital nomad lifestyle.

The most important thing is that you know what you need covered and choose an international health insurance provider that suits you. Even talk with a doctor before you buy if that’s what you need!

Do your research, so you have peace of mind!

Wrapping It Up

Are you still with me?

That was a lot. But it’s essential that you really do your homework before buying digital nomad health insurance.

For me – Health insurance offers absolute freedom.

Without your health, you won’t be able to embrace the digital nomad lifestyle and everything it offers completely. That’s why you must take care of your health with insurance that protects you!

Quality health insurance is a great way to ensure that you are covered and have real peace of mind no matter where your travels take you. Before making any decisions on digital nomad health insurance, make sure that you consider all of the essential factors that you need so you can find an insurer that best suits your needs.

I recommend starting with Genki World Resident or PassporCard Nomads Comfort! They are both great health insurance plans designed specifically with digital nomads in mind!

Remember:

Digital nomad health insurance and travel insurance are different. Choose the right level of coverage for you!
