Thinking about visiting Landeau Chocolate in Lisbon?
Many people have rave reviews of this slice of chocolate cake and said it’s “the best they’ve ever had”. With multiple locations popping up across Lisbon, Landeau Chocolate is making its mark.
If you’ve only got a few days or a few weeks, there’s lots of things to do, see, eat and explore. From the popular spots to the typical Portuguese cuisine to try like:
- pasteis de nata
- fresh seafood dishes
- piri piri chicken
- sardinhas (sardines)
- bifana sandwiches
- bacalhau (cod fish)
But is this slice of chocolate cake worth adding to the list?
Matthew and I tried Landeau Chocolate when living in Lisbon as digital nomads for a month. We weren’t quite sure if we’d make it to try this cake but on our last day in Lisbon — we were in the neighborhood and finally gave it a taste!

Here’s everything you need to know about Landeau Chocolate Lisbon, our personal experience and whether it’s worth a visit to taste what people claim to be the most luscious chocolate cake in the world.
What Is Landeau Chocolate Lisbon Anyway?
There’s only one food item on the menu at Landeau Chocolate Lisbon…
…a decadent slice of chocolate cake.
Landeau Chocolate Lisbon has been made famous by New York Times for producing one thing – ‘the best chocolate cake in the world’. This masterpiece was created by Sofia Landeau back in 2010, holding the recipe close to her heart.
There’s a lot of love and care put into each layer of the cake from the soft, textured cake to the silky smooth dark chocolate ganache that is topped with a generous amount of cocoa powder.

We think Sofia has created a chocolate cake that is without a doubt, as Prue of Great British Bake Off (iykyk), worth the calories!
Lisbon is a city full of great restaurants, coffee shops, brunch spots and pastries. There’s a lot of choices — so to say that it’s the best ever in the world, that’s a big statement!
The best part? You can be the judge if you visit their shops across the city.

- Cafeteria Landeau Chocolate (Chiado)
- Landeau Chocolate (LX Factory)

The original Landeau Chocolate store is located inside the LX Factory — a cool, hip space for creators, designers and tourists. If you’re in the LX Factory area, you must check out the famous bookshop called Ler Devagar.
‼️ Note: LX Factory is very busy on the weekends! If you visit, try a weekday or visit the other branches to avoid crowds.
Landeau Chocolate Lisbon has a small shop that’s thoughtfully decorated with unique, vintage decor.
Find yourself staying in the city center? The closest Landeau Chocolate shop to try a slice is the Chiado branch on Rua Da Flores 70.
Matthew and I visited the Chiado branch after shopping in the city. It’s positioned in a great location stop by to rest, recharge and indulge in a sweet treat.

Landeau Chocolate Lisbon has beautiful store decor with nice painting, warm lighting and interesting architecture. If you want downtime from all the sightseeing around Lisbon, Landeau is a great space to relax and dwell in chocolate heaven!
When we visited the Chiado branch, we were seated right away and there were no lines. We’ve heard the LX Factory branch is very busy, especially on weekends.
If you know what it’s like living in Lisbon, you’ll know you have to line up for most things like brunch spots, cafes, bars, restaurants and more.
Traveling to Lisbon? Here’s where to stay in Lisbon:
Landeau Chocolate don’t take reservations and only allow walk-ins, plan ahead or visit the Chiado branch instead to skip the lines.
How Much Is A Slice Of Landeau Chocolate Cake?
If you’re thinking it’s some outrageous price, we’d beg to differ!
You can visit both stores to either have a slice of cake or place an order for an entire cake.
One slice of this delightful cake costs €4.90 ($5.13 USD).
Slightly steep for a slice of cake but because of the reputation this cake has garnered, it’s worth a try. We shared a slice between the two of us and it was enough to try the “best chocolate cake in the world”. The price has risen through the years!

You can also buy a whole cake for special occasions or to simply enjoy every single day for the next week.

What Does The Landeau Chocolate Cake Taste Like?
When you think of your usual chocolate cake, you imagine there would be layers of cream and sponge making up the slice.
But that’s not what the Landeau chocolate Lisbon is like!
Landeau’s chocolate cake is made up of two layers: the bottom layer is a soft textured cake and the top layer is dark chocolate mousse. Cocoa powder is sprinkled on top to make all the flavors and textures come together.
What makes this chocolate cake stand out from the rest? It’s got the perfect balance!
You know how some people complain about chocolate cake being way too sweet while others complain about chocolate cake being way too dense and heavy? You don’t need to worry about either with this Landeau chocolate cake.

Landeau Chocolate Lisbon isn’t too sweet and it is a light, airy chocolate cake that will keep you wanting more. That’s what makes this cake so special!
Not a fan of dark chocolate? This might not be the best cake in the world for you but it is definitely worth a try — who knows, you might be converted after tasting this velvety smooth cake!
If you pair this cake with some coffee or even red wine (yes – you read that right), it’s a match made in heaven!

Matthew personally didn’t feel like it’s the best chocolate cake he’s ever had but it’s definitely up there with some of the best he’s had. For me personally, I’m not a big fan of cake but I really enjoyed the Landeau chocolate cake! It’s light, airy and not too sweet which made all the difference!
