There are so many things to do, see, eat and explore in Lisbon, Portugal. Whether you’ve only got a one-day itinerary or if you’re staying for a few weeks, you won’t run out of shops, cafes, restaurants and activities!
Lisbon isn’t super well-known (yet) as a foodie spot but I feel it gets overlooked. We had some of the best brunches and dinners that we still dream about to this day! When visiting, you have to try the usual list of local food like:
- pasteis de nata
- fresh seafood dishes
- piri piri chicken
- sardinhas (sardines)
- bifana sandwiches
- bacalhau (cod fish)
But what about chocolate cake?
That’s right – in this hilly, Portuguese city you can find the most luscious slice of chocolate cake heaven.
Matthew and I tried Landeau Chocolate Lisbon when we spent a month as digital nomads in the city. It was on my list of things to eat and we left it to our very last day because I wasn’t too sure it was worth it.
Here’s everything you need to know about Landeau Chocolate Lisbon and whether it’s worth a visit to taste what people claim to be the most luscious chocolate cake in the world.
What Is Landeau Chocolate Lisbon All About Anyway?
There’s only one food item on the menu at Landeau Chocolate Lisbon…
…a decadent slice of chocolate cake.
Landeau Chocolate Lisbon has been made famous by New York Times for producing one thing – ‘the best chocolate cake in the world’. That’s a pretty big thing to say but if you’re visiting this city, it’s easy enough to visit and you can be the judge!
This masterpiece was created by Sofia Landeau back in 2010, holding the recipe close to her heart. There’s a lot of love and care put into each layer of the cake from the soft, textured cake to the silky smooth dark chocolate ganache that is topped with a generous amount of cocoa powder.
We think Sofia has created a chocolate cake that is without a doubt, as Prue of Great British Bake Off (iykyk), worth the calories!
What Does The Landeau Chocolate Cake Taste Like?
When you think of your usual chocolate cake, you imagine there would be layers of cream and sponge making up the slice.
But that’s not what the Landeau Chocolate Lisbon is like!
Landeau’s chocolate cake is made up of two layers: the bottom layer is a soft textured cake and the top layer is dark chocolate mousse. Cocoa powder is sprinkled on top to make all the flavors and textures come together.
What makes this chocolate cake stand out from the rest? Some people complain about chocolate cake being way too sweet and therefore never really finishing a slice or enjoying it. Others complain about chocolate cakes being way too dense and heavy, skipping the entire joy you get from eating cake!
Landeau Chocolate Lisbon isn’t too sweet and it is a light, airy chocolate cake that will keep you wanting more. That’s what makes this cake so special!
Not a fan of dark chocolate? This might not be the best cake in the world for you but it is definitely worth a try — who knows, you might be converted after tasting this velvety smooth cake!
If you pair this cake with some coffee or even red wine (yes – you read that right), it’s a match made in heaven!
Where To Try Landeau Chocolate In Lisbon?
Landeau Chocolate Lisbon has gained popularity since it’s practically been dubbed the ‘best chocolate cake in the world’ and it’s expanded to having two stores across Lisbon, Portugal.
The original store is located inside the LX Factory which is a very cool, hip space for creators and designers that is a staple on Lisbon’s list of top things to do. Landeau Chocolate Lisbon has a small shop within the space that has been thoughtfully decorated with unique, vintage decor.
Since this cake has gained some popularity, they have opened a second location. If you find yourself in the center of Lisbon, you can easily make it to their store on Rua Da Flores 70 in the neighborhood of Chiado.
We visited the second location which has a very cool vibe to it! Again, they have carefully decorated the store with beautiful paintings, unique decor and added warm lighting to set the mood. If you’re looking for some downtime from all the sightseeing, they have created a space where you can truly relax and dwell in chocolate heaven!
You can visit both stores to either have a slice of cake or place an order for an entire cake. LX Factory can get crowded, especially on the weekends! The 2nd location is a way better option if you want a more quiet, peaceful experience. There will also be fewer lines at the second location – when we went there were absolutely no lines!
If you know anything about living in Lisbon, it’s that you will have to line up for most things such as brunch spots, restaurants, bars and more! For some reason they don’t take reservations ahead of time so if you want to skip the line – go to the 2nd location on Rua das Flores 70 instead!
How Much Is A Slice Of Landeau Chocolate Cake?
If you’re thinking it’s some outrageous price, we’d beg to differ!
One slice of this delightful cake only costs €3.70.
We were honestly expecting to pay a lot more because of the reputation this cake has garnered but they have kept the prices very reasonable. Another reason to just try the cake!
You can also buy a whole cake for special occasions or to simply enjoy every single day for the next week, here are their takeaway prices:
- Small Cake (700 gr): €23.00
- Medium Cake (1.5 kg): €35.00
- Large Cake (3 kg): €56.50
You can sit and relax inside the store with coffee, tea or wine. The prices for drinks range from €2.20 for a cappuccino to €3.50 for red wine or even port wine!
We think the pricing is very reasonable considering it’s one of the most delicious and unique chocolate cakes you can try in the world! If you are wandering around LX Factory or happen to be in the Chiado area, it’s easy enough to pop in for a breather and taste a more balanced chocolate cake.
Is Landeau Chocolate Cake In Lisbon Worth A Try?
Do you love chocolate cake?
If you do, I’d say it’s definitely worth giving Landeau Chocolate Lisbon a try. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to cake or chocolate but it will be fun to be the judge for yourself to see if it’s the best chocolate cake in the world!
Don’t love chocolate cake at all? I can see where you’re coming from, I’m not a big fan of cake either (chocolate on the other hand is a major YES for me). In saying that, it is still worth it to try a slice with Matthew who absolutely loves both! If you don’t find the time to fit it into your itinerary, you could give it a pass for sure.
Matthew personally didn’t feel like it’s the best chocolate cake he’s ever had but it’s definitely up there with some of the best he’s had. For me personally, I’m not a big fan of cake but I really enjoyed the Landeau chocolate cake! It’s light, airy and not too sweet which made all the difference!
Is it the best chocolate cake we’ve EVER had? We aren’t too sure about that but we know it is definitely in the top 10 list for us!
