eSIMs are changing the way people connect online. We’ve now been using eSIMs instead of physical SIM Cards for 3+ years and haven’t looked back.
If your phone is eSIM compatible it’s time to make the switch!
IMPORTANT: Your phone must be carrier unlocked to be able to support any eSIM. Check with your carrier for more details.
Apple iPhones Compatible With eSIM
Most modern iPhone models are now eSIM compatible, which allows for more flexibility and functionality with your phone.
What iPhones are compatible with eSIM?
The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later are all eSIM compatible and support eSIM technology. There are a few exclusions, please see below.

Here are some extra things you need to know about eSIMs on iPhones:
- eSIM functionality is not available on iPhones purchased from mainland China.
- iPhones purchased from Hong Kong and Macao are not eSIM compatible, with the exception of the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone SE (2020), and iPhone XS.
- iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users can now activate and use up to 2 eSIMs simultaneously.
- The following iPhone models do not support physical SIM cards: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Ashely purchased her iPhone 15 Pro Max in the United States, which means she is all-in on eSIMs (since there are no more sim card slots on these phones).

She no longer has a choice to purchase a physical SIM – even as we travel full-time!

Even if your phone is eSIM compatible, it must also be unlocked to eSIMs.
The good news is that’s easy to see if your phone is unlocked just by checking the setting. Follow the process below.
How To Check If Your Android Phone Is Unlocked
Follow these steps to check if your Android phone is unlocked:
- Open Settings, tap Connections (or network and internet) then click SIM Manager (or Mobile network)
- If you see “add eSIM” or “download SIM” or something similar, then your Android phone is likely unlocked.

Keep in mind that the labels in the settings might be different on your Android phone. But the process should be similar.
How To Check If Your iPhone Is Unlocked
Follow the steps to check if your iPhone is unlocked right now:
- Click on Settings, tap General and select About
- Now scroll down until you see the “Carrier lock” section
- If it says “NO SIM restrictions,” your iPhone should be unlocked

If you still aren’t sure, check with your local iPhone service carrier.
