Matthew and I stayed in a coliving space for the first time in Bali, back in 2018. As full-time digital nomads, we have stayed in over 10 coliving spaces around the world — 2 of them were right here in Bali!

Our Experience Coliving In Bali

Matthew and I’s first coliving experience was in Bali, particularly Bali Bustle. We ended up loving this space and making lifelong friends so much that we stayed for 11 months (on and off) over 2 years.

This was the exact nomad experience we were looking for — working in a nice, light-filled space and learning from interesting people doing interesting things.

Bali Bustle hosts community events from educational talks (Matthew led a workshop) to fun activities like a pong pong tournament amongst members.

We felt at home right away and this coliving in Bali had everything we were looking for — an outdoor pool, a private room with a private bathroom, cold AC (necessary for Bali), a ping pong table and a cafe. And the community was just that cherry on top!

The other coliving space in Bali that we stayed in is Shashvata Coliving. We stayed here for about 1.5 months and it was amazing to be in Canggu. Our room had a beautiful view of the rice fields and it’s very affordable for the area! Unfortunately, there wasn’t much of a community at Shashvata so that was a real downside.

Overall, we think there’s great options for coliving in Bali depending on your purpose: community, lifestyle and affordability. We were able to be productive with our work and find people to enjoy Bali with — the perfect mix!

🗺️ Location

The 4 locations of Bali Bustle are mainly located in the Kuta/Legian area. This was the most famous area in Bali back in the 2000s. Lately, Canggu and Uluwatu are more popular amongst nomads staying long-term.

If you want to be in Canggu, unfortunately there are no Bali Bustle coliving spaces there (at the moment, at least).

Kuta isn’t the best area in Bali but we still found nice cafes, brunch spots and things to do (eg. surfing, shopping). It is only a 10-minute drive to another nice area — Seminyak.

💰 Cost & Membership Options

The affordable price is what keeps Bali Bustle very competitive to other coliving in Bali. We found it very reasonable and more importantly, it’s great value for money!

Outsite has a huge villa with 9 private rooms. More specifically, the rooms are split like this:

• 1 apartment with one bedroom

All these rooms include AC, high-speed wifi, a simple work desk and ensuite bathrooms with its own desks, AC and high-speed wifi. The villa is very spacious with facilities including:

• sunbeds
• outdoor wellness shelter

There are grassy areas where you can roll out a mat and exercise or do yoga. Outsite puts a big emphasis on wellness and so they offer sound baths and massage (possibly at an additional cost).

Outsite has the facilities for any nomads who want to balance work and relaxation!

Community is at the heart of Outsite Perenenan.

The most unique part is that they have a community manager there to help you get set up in Bali, meet other members and plan activities together.

Community managers are usually born and raised in the local area — Bali in this case. So they are very knowledgeable and a great resource to help you during your stay.

Most people that join Outsite are relatively vetted. You’re less likely to have short-term travelers or backpackers on a gap year join Outsite! Instead, you get qualified people — usually fellow digital nomads or remote workers doing the same thing as you.

🗺️ Location

Outsite is located in a new, upcoming neighborhood called Perenenan. There’s lots of development happening with restaurants, cafes and bars popping up.

Perenenan is the next area above Canggu so you’re only 10 minutes away from all the hustle and bustle.

Matthew and I prefer staying in Perenenan because it’s quieter and less developed than Canggu. You can still drive through the lush rice fields around Perenenan.

Apart from the Bali location, Outsite is part of a global network. Staying here can open doors to other locations worldwide — you can check their website to see if they have homes wherever you’re going next.

💰 Cost & Membership Options

Outsite is seen as a more upscale, luxury nomad stay. Typically, the villa is modern, beautifully decorated and has high-quality furniture and amenities.

Since Outsite is a global network, they offer a yearly membership ($149 per year) to have access to exclusive locations and lower prices.

There’s a couple more different room types but they are approximately around the same costs as above.

I’ll be honest: it’s very very expensive. Especially if you’re not an Outsite Member and especially for Bali.

The prices can increase at any time, it’s best to double check with Outsite first.

You can easily pay by card on their website. We’re unsure if you can pay in cash, in person. I believe it all has to be paid in advance.

The best way to book a room at Outsite Perenenan is through their website. Their website is easy to use and secure!

Again, the best way to stay with Outsite is to become a member first. You get exclusive access to some locations and the lowest prices.

3. Outpost (Ubud & Canggu): Community-Focused

Outpost is a staple in Bali for digital nomads and remote workers. They are most famous for their coliving and coworking space in Ubud. In recent years, they opened a coliving space in Canggu — specifically the Berawa area.

Canggu and Ubud are two popular areas in Bali for digital nomads to stay. Personally, we prefer staying in Canggu but Ubud is also a great option if you are looking to mix work and life with wellness activities up there.

Matthew and I have toured their space in Ubud before and only driven past their Canggu space. We found they had an active community with work lunches and events set up.

Outpost has 3 locations across 2 areas in Bali: Ubud and Canggu.

In Ubud, Outpost provides Bali-style suites with cozy terraces. It’s perfect for those who want a more laid-back vibe surrounded by lush rice paddies and green forests. Ubud is known as Bali’s cultural and wellness hub, making it ideal for creatives and health-conscious nomads.

Canggu, on the other hand, offers a livelier atmosphere. There are plenty of cool restaurants, cafes, bars and beach clubs to discover. Unfortunately, the Canggu location does NOT have a coworking space anymore.

4. Shashvata (Canggu): Budget-Friendly

Shashvata is a coliving in Bali located in a peaceful pocket of Canggu. With 22 private rooms, you can wake up to stunning views of rice fields and beautiful sunrises.

Matthew and I stayed in Shashvata Coliving for 1.5 months. We lived in a Deluxe room on the 5th floor with a balcony overlooking the swimming pool below and lush green rice fields.

Shashvata Coliving is a similar building style to Bali Bustle where you have everything you need under one roof. You’ve got the swimming pool on the bottom floor with a cafe and some tables attached.

On the floors above are all the bedrooms. Each room has private ensuite bathrooms and some have balconies. It’s a great place to relax and recharge. Matthew and I loved having our coffee on the balcony before we went to the coworking space.

You’ve got the rooftop where you can chill out and watch the sunrise. It’s not very well fenced off but it looked like they used to have movie nights which is pretty cool.

Coworking is included in the monthly price. There are desks and chairs downstairs by the pool and upstairs on the rooftop. However, the chairs aren’t well-maintained so it’s not very comfortable to work from.

Shashvata has recently added a gym on the 5th floor. It’s only a few machines but they’ve got the basic equipment if you want to use it!

👯‍♀️ Community

Community at Shashvata seems like something they tried to cultivate when they first opened the space. Unfortunately, it seems like they have stopped planning events, workshops or get-togethers while we were staying there.

If community is at the top of your priority when choosing a coliving in Bali, Shashvata doesn’t quite cut it. People around the space were very friendly but personally, we didn’t make any friends while we stayed there.

However, from their recent Instagram posts — they have started to make the effort and create events for people to join. This seems like the right direction for building a community and you may be able to meet people at Shashvata now.

🗺️ Location

Shashvata is located in Canggu, particularly in the Berawa area. More importantly — a quiet area in Berawa without much construction which is very rare to find in Bali.

We loved the location because we were close to our coworking space, Bwork. You’ve also got the popular beach clubs like FINNs, Atlas or The Lawn within a 15-minute scooter drive.

Something to be aware of — Just a few blocks from Shashvata is a SUPER busy street known as Pantai Berawa. It was usually traffic up and down that road during peak rush hour times. But Shashvata is tucked away into the fields, a few streets away from Pantai Berawa.

💰 Cost & Membership Options

Price is where Shashvata wins for coliving options in Bali. This is competitively priced for the location — villas and guesthouses in Canggu have gone up in price like crazy.

Shashvata is still a great deal because you get to be in the heart of Canggu, where the rental prices have gone up dramatically.

The best way to book a room at Shashvata coliving in Bali is through WhatsApp.

We contacted them, they replied within 24 hours and gave us a price list of their rooms. They were very friendly and accommodating!

When you text them on WhatsApp, make sure to state your dates so they can check their availability. We suggest requesting the specific room you want. For example, we opted for a Deluxe Room on the 5th floor, facing the rice fields.

More Options For Coliving Spaces In Bali

There are more options for coliving in Bali. We believe the 4 stated above are the best options but these are also great in case you have a different budget or don’t mind staying at a hostel/shared room space.

Tribal (Hostel)

Tribal is a hostel with dorm rooms and private rooms available for digital nomads to live, work and socialize. The facilities are amazing with a cafe, pool and games for the common spaces.

Matthew and I visited Tribal to work from their coworking and cafe. It was awesome! The atmosphere was buzzing, people were working or swimming in the pool. If you stay at Tribal, it’s very easy to meet people because it’s just so social and a younger crowd.

Coming Soon: Bwork Coliving

Bwork, our beloved coworking space in Bali is supposedly opening up a coliving space. We have heard that they were working on this for a while and it’s going to be a few blocks away from Bwork itself.

Keep an eye out for it in the future because if it’s anything like Bwork — it’s going to be an EPIC space of the highest standard!

Rent A Villa vs Coliving In Bali — Which Is Better?

This is a common question to have when looking at housing options for Bali. Here’s some types of accommodation to choose from:

A villa is a house with a room, bathroom and sometimes a garden or outdoor pool. Whereas a coliving is a private room with shared facilities like a lounge area, kitchen and coworking space.

The biggest point of difference is having an instant community. If you stay in a villa, it’s harder to make friends since you’re somewhat isolated.

Staying at a coliving space means when you arrive, you become part of a community from joining group chats to planning social events to do together.

If it’s your first time in Bali, we highly recommend joining a coliving for the first month to help you adjust and find your friends. Once you’re comfortable, you can move into a villa later on and find better deals in person.
