When we first started traveling in 2018 as full-time digital nomads…

We’ve now been using SafetyWing travel insurance on and off for over 6+ years!
The truth is that SafetyWing offers a convenient travel insurance option for digital nomads, backpackers, remote workers and travelers.
In this SafetyWing insurance review, I will share with you our experience using SafetyWing, what’s included in their policies and what’s not. You’ll also learn about their new claims process launched this year and how it compares to other insurance providers.

Our Experience Using SafetyWing Insurance
Before diving into our experience with SafetyWing, some context:
I’ve spent the last 7 years traveling full-time across more than 40+ countries as a digital nomad.
During this time, I’ve personally used 5 different travel insurance providers and thoroughly reviewed 11 different insurance options specifically designed for digital nomads.
This extensive experience gives me a unique perspective to evaluate how SafetyWing compares to other providers in real-world situations.
We’ve been using SafetyWing Insurance for over 3 years traveling to places like Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, and dozens of other destinations.
The list goes on and on…
Here’s the deal:
What stands out most is that SafetyWing focuses on simplicity and transparency in their insurance policies.
They make it crystal clear what’s covered and what’s not covered.
They don’t feel like a traditional insurance company that tries to confuse you with complex terms. They genuinely want to provide affordable travel insurance that actually works for nomads.
Every time we’ve dealt with SafetyWing’s support team, it’s been straightforward and fast. You can also purchase SafetyWing coverage in minutes.
I once bought SafetyWing coverage after landing in Bangkok waiting for my connecting flight. The whole process took less than 5 minutes!

The two big reasons we choose SafetyWing are:
- They offer coverage that automatically renews every 28 days
- Insurance works in almost every country worldwide
We know that SafetyWing was built specifically for people like us – digital nomads who don’t have a fixed home base.

That made us feel confident they understand our unique needs.
SafetyWing also has strong reviews and a good reputation online. This was another factor in our decision.
We really value having reliable coverage no matter where we are. The focus on affordable, flexible insurance for nomads is what made SafetyWing stand out from traditional travel insurance companies.
The rest of this SafetyWing review focuses on what they offer regarding their insurance plans. Keep in mind that this review is not a recommendation for buying insurance from SafetyWing. Think of it more as an honest overview.
You must do your own research and evaluate the options for yourself. At the end of the day, only you know if an insurance policy will work for your specific situation.
With all that in mind…Let’s get into it!
Who Is SafetyWing?
SafetyWing is a travel insurance company specifically tailored to the needs of digital nomads, travelers and expats living abroad.

But the big question we get asked all the time…
Is SafetyWing Legit?
Yes, SafetyWing is a legit company that was founded in 2018 in Norway and is now headquartered in California. They have quickly become one of the leading providers of digital nomad insurance with more than 100,000+ customers worldwide traveling in over 150+ countries.
To put it simply: There are a lot of people who use SafetyWing today!
SafetyWing offers two main Insurance plans:
- Nomad Essential: Flexible travel medical insurance.
- Nomad Complete: Full health insurance with extra travel protections.

In this SafetyWing review, I will be focusing on both Nomad Essential and Nomad Complete.
These are the most popular and innovative insurance plans that SafetyWing offers!

This flexibility is really rare for travel insurance!
What’s Covered By SafetyWing Essential?
Here’s a list of the benefits offered in SafetyWing Essential:
Medical Coverage:
Travel Coverage:
What’s great about SafetyWing Nomad Essential is that you can a combination of travel and medical insurance. Unlike some competitors, SafetyWing’s benefits include things like lost checked luggage and travel delays.
They go beyond just emergency medical costs.
Another thing I like with SafetyWing Essential is that you won’t overpay for benefits you don’t need.
For example, SafetyWing offers Adventure Sports and Electronics Theft add-ons.

If you want to cover “adventure sports” such as boxing, parasailing, paragliding, skiing, hang gliding and more, you can purchase this coverage as an optional add-on.
This helps ensure that people who need the coverage have access to it and the rest of us won’t overpay for benefits we don’t need.
Important: Coverage in the USA is limited and requires an add-on to get all plan benefits.
SafetyWing Essential Notable Exclusions
Like all insurance, there are some things SafetyWing Essential won’t cover:
The biggest thing to know about SafetyWing Essential is that it’s primarily emergency travel insurance.
That means you don’t get benefits like routine healthcare, regular checkups, or comprehensive dental care. Essential is travel insurance in case of an emergency while you’re traveling.
Here’s the bottom line…
SafetyWing Essential provides solid emergency medical travevel coverage for digital nomads and long-term travelers. It offers flexible coverage that you can buy anytime and adjust as needed.
Just ensure you understand the benefits and exclusions before signing up to make sure it’s right for you.
SafetyWing Complete
SafetyWing Complete is comprehensive global health insurance designed for digital nomads, expats, and remote workers who need complete medical coverage worldwide, including routine care and preventive health services.
SafetyWing Complete
- 🌍 Complete worldwide health coverage
- ✅ Annual coverage with comprehensive benefits
- 🩺 Treatment at any doctor or hospital worldwide
- 🏥 Hospitalization, accidents & emergencies
- 🚑 Medical transport & evacuation
- 🧑⚕️ Preventive checkups, tests & vaccines
- 🤰 Maternity care and complications
- 🧠 Mental health support
- 🎒 Minimum 12-Month Commitment
The big difference is that SafetyWing Complete is full health insurance.
That means you get benefits like preventative care, routine checkups, and comprehensive medical treatment included in your plan.
It’s designed for digital nomads, expats and remote workers who want comprehensive health insurance wherever they travel.
SafetyWing Complete requires an annual commitment and goes through an application process before approval.
What’s Covered By SafetyWing Complete?
SafetyWing Complete includes everything from Essential plus comprehensive health benefits.
Here’s is a list of what’s covered:
Enhanced Medical Coverage:
Comprehensive Health Benefits:
Maternity Care:
Enhanced Travel Coverage:
Sports Activities: Do you like outdoor adventures?
SafetyWing Complete combines travel and health coverage into one comprehensive plan. What that really means is you automatically get the Adventure Sports INCLUDED for free.
Nice, right?
This is full remote health insurance that gives you a ton of benefits to manage your health while traveling full-time.
The big thing that I like here is that SafetyWing offers benefits for Mental health and preventive care. This pushes the plan from being good to comprehensive and something that I think a lot of Nomads will value.
Important: Coverage in the USA, Hong Kong, and Singapore is limited unless you get the add-on for all benefits.
SafetyWing Complete Notable Exclusions
Here are some of the notable exclusions for SafetyWing Complete:
The biggest thing to know about SafetyWing Complete is that it’s comprehensive health insurance with travel benefits.
That means you get extensive medical coverage but with more restrictions and requirements compared to the Essential plan.
You’ll need to go through an application process and may have waiting periods for certain benefits, but there is a lot offered in Complete
Here’s the bottom line…
SafetyWing Complete provides comprehensive health and travel coverage for digital nomads who want full medical protection. It offers extensive benefits but requires a longer commitment and higher premiums.
Just ensure you understand the application process, waiting periods, and coverage limitations before applying to make sure it’s right for you and your situation.
Ask all the questions upfront, so there aren’t any surprises later on!
Does SafetyWing Cover COVID-19?
Yes, SafetyWing does cover COVID-19 in the same way it covers any other illness, as long as it wasn’t contracted before your policy start date. It also can’t fall under other policy exclusions or limitations.
What does the COVID-19 coverage include?
You’re covered for medically necessary treatment, tests and mandatory quarantine up to your plan overall max limits. For example, the antibody test isn’t covered because it’s considered not medically necessary.
If you get sick with COVID-19 while traveling, SafetyWing will cover your medical treatment just like any other unexpected illness.
SafetyWing Pricing
The cost of SafetyWing Nomad Essential starts at just $56.28 per 4 weeks and Nomad Complete starts at $161.50 per month.
The amount you pay for your plan will ultimately depend on your age and whether you want coverage in the US, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Interesting Point: With Nomad Complete, you can be covered past the age of 64 as long as you signed up before turning 64 and continue renewing your plan without any gaps. Cool, right?

In our opinion, SafetyWing seems to be generally designed for younger people. The prices skyrocket after the age of 49 years of age. And remember that SafetyWing doesn’t cover people over the age of 69 years old.
In saying that, it’s one of the most affordable one way travel insurance plans you’ll find. It’s also extremely flexible and offers good value for money when you consider what’s included.
Making A Claim With SafetyWing
SafetyWing claims work similarly to other travel insurance providers.
They have a dedicated claims portal to handle everything.
Here’s how it works:
You’ll first have to choose whether it’s a medical claim or a travel claim. After that, you will be asked to attach the necessary documents.

When you are filing a medical claim, you need to attach:
- Your medical report (a note from your doctor that includes symptoms, diagnosis and treatment)
- A detailed invoice outlining what you paid for
- Proof of payment or receipt
- Your SafetyWing insurance policy number
Make sure you attach all the required documents upfront so that your claim can be handled quickly. SafetyWing aims to provide a confirmation email that your claim has been received and is being processed within 3 business days.
Keep in mind that all claims must be filed within 60 days following the termination of the insurance.
Average Time To Get Reimbursed For A Claim
How long does it take for SafetyWing to process a claim?
Your claim should take between 7 and 25 days to be processed. You will be reimbursed into your bank account by direct wire transfer if approved.
Claims take different amounts of time based on the incident and what you are claiming for.
SafetyWing Insurance Cancellation Policy
SafetyWing offers flexible cancellation terms for Nomad insurance. It’s one of the benefits that has made them so popular!
But the cancellation policies are different depending on whether you purchase Nomad Essential or Nomad Complete.
Nomad Essential Cancellation
A huge benefit of SafetyWing Nomad Essential is that you can cancel your insurance policy anytime.
Here’s how it works:
Log in to your SafetyWing account and click the “Stop insurance” button on your profile. Your insurance policy will then be canceled when your next payment is due to be debited.
That’s it!
Nomad Complete Cancellation
Here’s the deal with canceling SafetyWing Nomad Complete:
You’re locked into a 12-month commitment when you sign up. But don’t panic – you get a 15-day window to cancel after your coverage starts or renews if you change your mind.
What happens if you cancel mid-contract?
Simple – you’ll only get back up to 65% of what you paid for unused coverage. Not ideal, right?
But there’s good news…
If you have a “qualifying life event” (like getting married and jumping on your spouse’s health insurance), SafetyWing will give you a full refund for unused coverage.
Bottom line:
Make sure you’re committed before signing up because getting out early will cost you. The 15-day grace period is your safety net, so use it if you’re having second thoughts.
