Looking for the best gyms in Antigua Guatemala?
You’ve come to the right place!
Whenever we land in a new place as digital nomads, we check for 2 things (amongst others) – a coworking space and a gym. When you travel full-time, it’s important to get into a routine and take care of your fitness!
This wasn’t a problem in Antigua because they had good options for a gym! It all depends on the kinds of workouts you like to do – but we’re happy to say that there’s something for everyone.
After living in Antigua for 2+ months, we think these are the best gyms in Antigua Guatemala.
These Are The Best Gyms In Antigua Guatemala
You won’t have a problem finding gyms in Antigua, Guatemala. There are plenty of options no matter what kind of workout you like to do. We found they are all very affordable too which makes it hard to not sign up for a gym membership (if you know what I mean).
The gyms in Antigua Guatemala vary from all kinds of factors like price, membership options and types of workouts + machines that are available.
Before you choose a gym, you should ask yourself these questions:
- How do I like to work out?
- Do I only need equipment?
- Would I join group classes?
- How much am I willing to pay for a month’s membership?
- Am I willing to enter a contract?
The other thing you need to be aware of…is that they don’t speak much English all around Guatemala (obviously). I’ve learned some Spanish while we were Playa del Carmen digital nomads and it has totally carried us through Mexico, Guatemala and Medellin! When you are enquiring at gyms, just be prepared with some basic phrases you want to ask and have Google Translate handy!
Take your time and make sure you understand what they are trying to say to you! It can get confusing real quick – we had a couple of problems with ours (you’ll read below) and had to go back 3 times.
Here are the best gyms in Antigua Guatemala worth their membership.
1. La Fabrica Gym
La Fabrica is the best gym in Antigua Guatemala – there I said it!
They have certified trainers to help you work out, plenty of group classes (some interesting ones) and well-maintained gym equipment! La Fabrica has a big, open facility with 2 levels and by the sheer volume of people that go to this gym – you can tell it’s everyone’s favorite as well.
This gym has very flexible membership options which makes it great if you’re a traveler passing through or a digital nomad only staying a couple of months. The owners and staff are very friendly and welcoming, you also won’t struggle too much with the Spanish since some of them can speak a little English!
Location
La Fabrica is located on the east side of the city. If you live anywhere in the center or on the east side, you should have no problem walking to and from La Fabrica.
We had every desire to sign up for Lab Fabrica Gym because our Guatemala friend, Heyner, told us how good it was. Unfortunately, it was just too far from our apartment so we had to go to another gym.
If you’re within 10 minutes of walking distance to La Fabrica Gym, we highly recommend it!
Facilities & Amenities
For some, this gym has a lot of great equipment to use. We did a little walk-through when we enquired here and the machines seemed like they were being well-maintained (which is important for a gym).
When you sign up (for no matter how many days/months), you get access to all the equipment and classes that La Fabrica offers.
Workouts / Programs
They have a mix of spaces spread out on the 1st and 2nd floors because they want to offer a mix of different workout styles. These are just some of the classes and/or programs they provide:
- crossfit
- yoga
- aerial yoga
- machine/equipment work
- functional training
- dance
- boxing
- calisthenics & core
- spinning
Yeah, La Fabrica offers a LOT of good and dynamic group classes so you don’t get bored of working out! If you’re a fan of group classes like me, this will probably be the best gym in Antigua for you.
And if it’s not your thing – you can still use all the equipment they offer like
- treadmills
- free weights
- pads
- dumbels
- machines
and more!
All this to say that – you can have whatever kind of workout you want at La Fabrica which is why it is one of (if not the best) gyms in Antigua Guatemala.
Price For Membership
Prices depend on the gym’s policies. For some reason in Guatemala, they all have this thing called “inscripcion” which is like a registration fee. When you’re only working out for a few days or weekly – you don’t have to pay this but…
…if you want to sign up for a month or more then you will need to pay an “inscripcion” fee.
Here are the prices for a membership at La Fabrica:
- 1 Day: 40Q / $5.20 USD
- 1 Week: < 120Q / $15.60 USD
- 1 Month: 275Q / 36 USD (inscripicion is an extra 7.20 USD)
- 3 Months: 735Q / $96 USD
How To Book Your Membership
We recommend going in and having a look first. Ask any questions you need to and decide if you want to sign up. They will give you more updated prices (if any) and you can pay by card or cash.
2. Antiguas Gym
This is one of the most popular gyms in Antigua Guatemala – mainly because it is super cheap and affordable to train here!
If you’re on a tight budget but want to get your fitness in – Antiguas Gym is a great option for you. It’s a little small and cramped but it contains all of the equipment you need for a decent workout session.
Location
Antiguas Gym is the most centrally located one, in our opinion. No matter which side of the city you’re on – it’s easy to get to.
It’s only 2 blocks from Plaza Mayor (the main square) and if you’re digital nomads like us it’s easy to get from your coworking space in Antigua to the gym.
Facilities & Amenities
They have plenty of facilities and amenities available at Antigua gym. The equipment is a little older than other gyms but it’s fine because you pay a little less anyway.
In Antigua’s gym, you’ll find these types of equipment:
- TRX
- treadmills
- free weights
- rope
- rowers
For us, it was way too cramped inside and we couldn’t imagine working out here when it’s full! If it’s hot too, there’s no air-conditioning which could be bad or good depending on how you like to work out. It’s also a very simple design and has plain white walls!
Workouts / Programs
Antigua’s gym has 3 different ways to help you improve your fitness. The first is through personal training – they have certified trainers that will guide you. The second is through group classes which can be a lot of fun! The third is through personal routine as they say, which is basically creating your own workout and using the gym as just that!
They offer group classes like functional training, dance and so much more!
Price For Monthly Membership
Antigua’s Gym offer weekly and monthly memberships. Unfortunately, there aren’t any daily passes available.
Here’s the pricing for a gym membership at Antigua’s Gym:
- Registration / Inscripcion: $7 USD
- 1 Month: $34 USD
- 1 Week: $15
- 12 Sessions: $30 USD
How To Book Your Membership
Simply walk in and have a look first! You can enquire about the price and membership options in person. It’s so much easier this way and you can check it out before committing for a month or a week. You can pay by card or cash here.
Gyms in Antigua Guatemala – Are They Any Good?
It’s safe to say – you’ll find high-quality gyms in Antigua Guatemala!
We know it can be hard to decide which gym to go with but we hope this guide has helped make your decision!
The gym in Antigua that we went to unfortunately has since permanently closed (it’s called Scandinavia Gym).
If we hadn’t gone to Scandinavia, we would have signed up La Fabrica. It’s the best gym in Antigua if you want friendly staff, good equipment, a spacious area, and a variety of group classes to attend. Our friends went to this one and absolutely loved it!
Antiguas Gym is a good option but it’s honestly only a couple of bucks more to sign up with La Fabrica which is way nicer (in terms of design, facilities and amenities). We simply choose based on how easy it is to get to and from the gym. Maybe it’s the same for you!
